What two things will get you a fulfilling and satisfying life so you can leave meaningless and mediocre in the dust? A past U.S. President offered his two-word solution that will guide you to success.
Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States, wasn’t a man of many words and was often called “Silent Cal.†True to his nickname, Coolidge offered this formula for success:
“Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.â€
And now you have Silent Cal’s recipe for success. Persistence and determination will take you where you want to go. As an entrepreneur and a writer, I’ve experienced the power of applying these two words in my business, and you can too.
That sounds nice, right? But what are persistence and determination, and how do you seize the power locked up in these two words?
Persistence means being steadfast – despite opposition. Determination means having a fixed purpose, or coming to a decision. These are both good qualities.
Determination gives you a goal or purpose—something on the horizon to set your sights on. Do you want to write a book to share your message with the world? Do you want to build stronger relationships with your customers to take your business to the next level?
Persistence is the fuel that will get you from where you are in life currently to your desired destination.
Let’s take a little practical application break to drive these concepts home. Take out a sheet of paper or pull up a blank document on your computer.
Write out where you are in life today with your career, relationships, health, spirituality and finances.
Next, shift your gaze to the horizon. Write out what you want in these five areas of your life (career, relationships, health, spirituality, and finances). It’s important to spend a bit of time with what you really want. That want or desire is what will keep you connected to the fuel of persistence whencreativity wanes.
As a word of caution, if you don’t really want the things that you’ve written down, your desire will quickly fizzle out like a boring, 25-cent sparkler on the 4th of July. I want you to have enough rocket fuel to shoot to the moon!
Now you know where you are, and you know where you want to go. Jot down 5 things you can do this week that will take you closer to your destination. Then do them.
Determine your dream. Plot out a path to achieving your dream. Persist until you succeed.
I’d love to hear from you. What’s your dream? What fuels you to take action?
