Is That A Book Kicking Around Inside You?

By Michael Drew - Jul 30 , 2008
It usually takes a while for a woman to discover she’s pregnant. She doesn’t look any different in those first weeks following conception. She doesn’t necessarily feel any different, either. But something miraculous is happening. A child has been conceived and is developing rapidly inside of her.Oftentimes writers are just as oblivious when it comes to hatching a good book. They’ll conceptualize a ground-breaking idea and it might be several weeks before they realize there’s a book kicking around inside their head.
Both are pretty exciting revelations to have. And though most would argue having a baby is the more noble cause, writing a book also gives you the opportunity to enrich lives and advance the human race.
Changing Lives
Today’s world spins at a frantic pace. People don’t read books because there’s nothing better to do, they read them in hopes of adding something to their lives. And whether that ‘something’ is information, escape, perspective or knowledge, you have the opportunity to provide what they’re looking for.
You don’t have enough time to help thousands of people by communicating one-on-one, but as an author, you have the ability to make each reader feel like you wrote your book specifically for them.
Books change lives. It’s a cause worth championing.
Adding Values
Most of us try to instill our children with good values. Our hope is that they grow up to be happy and productive members of society. Good people who have a social conscious, upstanding morals, and a strong code of ethics.
But when you pull back and look at the world through a ‘big-picture’ lens, an argument can be made that, as a whole, we’re falling short of our own ideals. Where do you stand?
Do your words and actions support your ideals? If so, why not take the opportunity to share them with others? Don’t ever accept that you can’t bring about change.
Write a book. Make a difference.
Discovering Yourself
Do you know who you are—really? Have you determined your purpose for being on Earth? Or do you feel as if life is a never-ending search for identity? You’d be amazed at how much you can learn about yourself during the book-writing process. It brings out feelings and attitudes you didn’t even know were inside you. It’s like holding your heart, mind, and soul up to a mirror to reveal the inner you. I’ve promoted the books of many authors who swear by writing as the most honest, revealing, therapeutic process they’ve ever experienced.
Start paying attention to those ideas and ideals you so readily gloss over. Who knows …you might just have a book kicking around inside of you without even knowing it. One that can enrich lives. Including your own.
