NEW YORK, NY — January 21, 2009 – Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, announced today that it collected and donated more than 1.2 million books during its 2008 Holiday Book Drive. With the help of enthusiastic booksellers and generous customer donations, Barnes & Noble was able to collect more books to help needy children in communities across the country than ever before. In addition, Barnes & Noble, together with subsidiary Sterling Publishing, donated another 100,000 books to First Book, a nonprofit providing new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books.
“Every year we receive so many wonderful compliments from customers, booksellers, and especially from recipient organizations about our Holiday Book Drive,” says Sarah DiFrancesco, director of Community Relations. “We could not continue this program without the passion of our booksellers, or the generosity of our customers.”
Community partners who have already begun distributing the books collected by Barnes & Noble booksellers include schools, libraries, social service organizations, Boys & Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations, Reach Out and Read, United Way, and the Salvation Army. Other local recipients include Book Showers for Literacy in Illinois, Childhood Leukemia Hospital for Children in Virginia, Deer Valley Unified School District Title One Schools in Arizona, Family Services of Western Pennsylvania, Help Me Grow of Northwest Ohio, Literacy Inc. of New York, Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter, Oklahoma Community Action, Project Flight Buffalo, School on Wheels in California, and The Children’s Hospital in Colorado.
