How the Law of Process Applies in 2011…

By Kyle McNeil - Dec 28 , 2010
Personally, I think most New Year’s resolutions are a joke. They’re short-sighted, and hack at the leaves of our problems, instead of focusing on the roots. Often this is because we don’t honor the input and effort necessary to change things. This is why it’s so important to remember the “Law of Process”, which basically states “things take time.”
The Law of Process – Leadership develops daily, not in a day. Leadership is not a one day thing; it’s an every day thing. It’s the disciplined, consistent effort to improve a little bit each day that reaps great harvests over a lifetime. – John Maxwell
(Credit to John Maxwell, and his book the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, for sparking this post.)
With your resolution or plans for 2011, how are you accounting for John Maxwell’s “Law of Process”?
You can find out here, with these 7 questions, that will help you uncover where you are at, in respect to the “Law of Process”:
- Are you willing to do the work? Michael Jordan didn’t magically turn into a 6-time NBA champion. Never has an author manifested a best seller with little to no work, and so far, I’ve not heard of any thought leader whose marketing platform plopped magically into their business.
- Are you more like a bear going into hibernation or someone in the McDonald’s drive through? How patient are you really?
- Is what I want in 2011 really what I want? Or is it societal, parental, family, business pressures, etc.? The more your process is for the dreams of others, the more painful and slow it will be.
- How is your intention/commitment for 2011 serving the world? One of John Maxwell’s rules in Put Your Dream to the Test, is “does your dream benefit others”? If your dream doesn’t benefit others, it’s going to be a tough year, especially since we’re in a Civic Cycle.
- How much will your character grow in 2011? From many people, mentors, teachers, and books, it’s ever apparent that focusing on this leads to the deepest and richest fruits in life and business. My suggestion here is, go a bit deeper in yourself; find something that moves, inspires, and challenges you.
- Are you heading into a Dip? You want to, and if you just started one, you probably want to stick with it! If you haven’t read Seth Godin’s book, “The Dip”, get this 90-page book that helps you understand when to “stick and when to stop”. The “dip” separates the contenders from the pretenders. It’s related to the “Law of Process”.
- What will happen if I really commit to the “Law of Process” and these steps???
Sitting with these questions myself, I’m going to work through this process this week. I encourage you to jump on board as well. This is simply a responsible step forward for us in building our 2011 plan. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and 2011 won’t be either. It’s a process
What process are you committed to in 2011? And remember, leave the leaves and go for the roots.
