7 Steps to Writing An ‘About Us’ Page

BTCAndrea

The task of writing copy for a website can be overwhelming.  How do you effectively communicate and relay the message you want to share?  My favorite to write is the ‘About Us/Me’ page.  Below I’ll show you a process to write your ‘About Us/Me’ page in less than 45 minutes and have it ready for posting on your blog.  If you have a site that is more than just a blog, the process can be similar, but the questions are a little different.  I’ll address that in a future post.

To prepare for this process, I’d like to give you simple reminders:

Be realShare who you are in this page.  Your audience is looking to connect with you, and being real on this page will allow your audience to connect with you.

Don’t over think. By simply answering the questions below, you’ll come up with a great ‘About Us’ page.  If you over think the process, it becomes too complex.

Last and most importantPlease respect the time limits.  It’s easy to try to spend more time thinking about what you want to write.  DON’T!  Just let your fingers do the talking and write away!  We’ve allowed for editing in the process, so you can perfect it at that point.

Alright, the process for Michael Drew’s speed writing your ‘About Us’ page is a few simple steps.

Read the questions below.

Answer the question in only 90 seconds by just writing and answering with the first thing that comes out of your head.

Move on to the next question.

When you have completed all the questions, start back at the beginning of your writing and spend 2 minutes editing what you wrote, one question at a time.

Now, go back and tie them all together into a story and they are ready for your ‘About Us’ page.

The questions below are what you’ll need to answer to ensure you have a comprehensive ‘About Us’ page on your blog site.  Please read each question and spend only 90 seconds answering the question.

1.) Who Are You?

2.) Why Are You Blogging?

3.) What Are You Most Well Known For?

4.) What Was Your Most Recent Success?

5.) Tell A Story That Illustrates Your Personality & Character

6.) What Is Your Professional Educational Background?

7.) What Works Have You Previously Published?

Those are the elements of a rockin’ ‘About Us’ page.  Set aside and hour, grab a tea or coffee, and giddy up!  You’ve got what you need to get at least one page all buttoned up on your site.

Let me know how it goes, and when you’re done, post below and share a link to your fabulous ‘About Us’ page.

I always like to tell clients that the About Us page is one of the few places on your site where you can talk about yourself first. The rest of your site you should almost always talk about your customers first, but when they click on the About Us page, they give you explicit permission to put yourself at the center.

This is great advice for actually writing the content Andrea, nice post.

Well said Anthony. This is what I suggest to clients as well. You have to make sure that you know your visitors are tuned into WII.FM (What’s In It For Me).
