There are book clubs for just about every topic of book. And these days, when so many of us are looking for recommendations on what to read, a book club is a great way for people to focus on a subject or field that interests them.
For you, book clubs offer a unique pre-publication opportunity. They’re made up of individuals who have signed up to receive regular updates on forthcoming books, usually on a specific subject. We’re not talking here about those casual book clubs where folks discuss the latest bestseller, as valid and interesting as these can be. There are book clubs that publishers target as a way of building interest in their books – book clubs help the word of mouth for a book.
Some book clubs have general selections and broad target markets. Others may be a bit smaller, but their target markets are pinpointed and each member is keenly interested in the club’s selection. Some of these book clubs are run by retailers, such as Target, while others are run by organizations. Some specify e-books, other rely on print books and still others offer their readers a choice. In any event, do an online search to see what works for your topic. In addition to generalist book clubs such as Book of the Month Club, there are business book clubs, and personal health book clubs and book clubs devoted to self-help – so your title might fit into one of those.
The acquisitions or selection managers of book clubs will read your book and consider it. If they like it they’ll recommend it to their members. This recommendation can mean a lot to the success of your book because book clubs can order in quantities of 2,000 to 3,000 books. Book clubs give you credibility – even if not everyone in the club wants to order your book.
And if the book club members do not purchase your book through the club offer, being mentioned on a book club’s list of selections may be enough to entice members to pick up your book the next time they visit a bookstore.
In our next post, we’ll continue to look at how book clubs can work for you.
