George A. Kennedy’s book, On Rhetoric, reveals flaws in Aristotle’s Rhetoric.

George A. Kennedy’s book, On Rhetoric, reveals flaws in Aristotle’s Rhetoric. But all that has been – and still is – ignored by the community of Rhetoric scholars. Further, Rhetoric focuses merely on forms, says expert, while ‘NewView’ principle adds needed content to form.

Provo, UT – March 21, 2010 (PressReleasePivot) — A recent book, On Rhetoric, by brilliant translator George A. Kennedy, indicates that Aristotle’s Rhetoric is deeply flawed. At least, that’s according to Bill Drew, author of a successful new e-book, The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else.

According to Bill Drew, CEO of NewView Options, George A. Kennedy’s recent book, On Rhetoric, Second Edition (2006), says that the key subject matter of Aristotle’s Rhetoric was Greek politics, but Aristotle used no actual, real speeches of Greek politics in his analyses. Kennedy also says that Aristotle probably had but little personal knowledge of Greek politics. In other words, according to Drew, Aristotle’s Rhetoric consists of reasoning based purely on abstractions that are disconnected from anything real.

“Not only that,” Drew expounded, “but Kennedy’s book also points out that Aristotle’s Rhetoric was lost for over 200 years after his death. And, since Aristotle’s Rhetoric hadn’t been taught anywhere outside his own school in Athens, the Rhetoric of Isocrates took over and became the most popular Rhetoric in Greece. And it was most probably the Rhetoric of Isocrates that Cicero and Quintilian wrote about, not Aristotle’s. Kennedy said that Aristotle’s Rhetoric was, therefore, and I quote, ‘obsolete as a school text’ and wasn’t the Rhetoric taught in Greek, Roman, and European classrooms throughout history.”

Drew went on to point out that George Kennedy is an expert, a brilliant translator of ancient Greek, and he’s saying, Drew believes, that Rhetoric is deeply flawed, despite the fact that it was written by that great thinker, Aristotle. In fact, despite all the intellectual complexity that modern rhetoricians like to attribute to Aristotle’s Rhetoric, Kennedy’s book asserts that “Aristotle’s precepts can be reduced to a recommendation that a speaker give a reason (or apparent reason) for what is asserted.”

Drew’s new book offers an alternative to Aristotle’s and other kinds of rhetoric. “My e-book, The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else, presents NewView, a breakthrough concept on all the kinds of newnesses – only five, believe it or not – that can be used to generate new content. That’s the opposite of Rhetoric, of course, which supplies only forms. I developed NewView in my Master’s thesis and have used it to win awards as a technical writer for twenty-five years. NewView actually works really well with Rhetoric by ensuring there’s new content for readers / audiences, which Rhetoric neglects. Also, NewView is easy to work with, and it’s already being used by students, teachers, and businessmen. NewView works with everything already taught by writing teachers, providing writing with that universally neglected dimension of ‘What’s new to the reader’.”

Drew’s company, NewView Options, provides several testimonials about the effectiveness of NewView on their website. Further positive reviews of his book and his NewView methodology – essentially, testimonials – are also available on Amazon.com with his book.

Drew’s 326-page e-book, The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else, is available now online for $12.50. It is also available on Amazon.com as a Kindle e-book for $9.50. The companion software, NewView Essay Services, which automates the thesis-making process in the e-book, is available on a subscription basis for 3-, 6-, and 12-month terms ($15.50, $20.50, $30.50). Drew’s newest e-book, The Secret DNA of Analyzing Short Stories, will soon be available for $6.50 on his website.

MCLEAN, VA, March 25, 2009 – Here’s the latest book buzz from USA TODAY with a sneak peek at the highlights of tomorrow’s Best-Selling Books list:

• It’s not just fans who love Twilight author Stephenie Meyer — it’s other young-adult authors who’ve caught her approving eye. Meyer holds four of the top five spots on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list; five if you count Catherine Hardwicke’s debut at No. 4 with Twilight: Director’s Handbook. Meyer has so much clout that when she wrote on her website in January that The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester is “the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men,” booksellers couldn’t keep up with demand.

• Authors are increasingly using videos to promote their books. None has done it better than Kelly Corrigan, 41, whose memoir, The Middle Place, rises to No. 17, three months after it was reprinted in paperback. It’s about her breast cancer and her father’s bladder cancer. Corrigan says she had so many speaking requests during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October that she made a 5-minute video showing her talking about how friends and families help transcend problems, “whether it’s cancer, infertility, unemployment or divorce.’’ It’s been viewed 4.1 million times on YouTube.

For all the news from this week’s Best-Selling Books list, see Thursday’s editions of USA TODAY for the top 50 books or log ontowww.top150.usatoday.com for the complete list of 150 best-selling books from last week.

USA TODAY’s list differs from other lists because the rankings are based solely on retail sales data from major chain and independent bookstores across the USA. Included are more than one million volumes from approximately 3,000 large-inventory, diverse-content bookstores. USA TODAY’s list shows readers what is selling across the whole range of books, not just what is selling by category. Hardcover, paperback, fiction and non-fiction are pooled together. USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list has been published each Thursday in the newspaper’s Life section since October 28, 1993.

USA TODAY is the nation’s top-selling newspaper with a total average daily circulation of 2.3 million. Published at more than 30 locations in the USA and abroad, USA TODAY is available worldwide. USA TODAY is published by Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI). The USA TODAY brand also includes: USATODAY.com, an award-winning news and information Web site that is updated 24 hours per day; USA TODAY Sports Weekly, a magazine for enthusiasts of college and professional football and baseball; USA TODAY Mobile, offering up-to-the minute news and information on a variety of mobile platforms and devices; and USA TODAY LIVE, the television arm of the USA TODAY brand that brings the spirit and quality of the newspaper to television.

Business- to-Business Tool for Booksellers and Librarians

NEW YORK, NY (March 23, 2009) — HarperCollins Publishers launched today the beta version of its digital sales catalog. Located at www.harpercollinscatalogs.com, the content-rich catalog offers an environmentally friendly, up-to-date tool for booksellers and librarians.

Launching with Fall 2009 titles, the digital catalog features book jackets and covers, prices, on-sale dates, marketing information, reviews, sample spreads, quotes and important media alerts. Offering a significantly more dynamic experience than a traditional print catalog, the digital version features rich media content, including author interviews, promotional videos, and audio samples. The site is updated multiple times a day to provide the most current information. Additionally, users will be able to browse inside galleys and Advance Reader Editions for select titles. These features make the digital catalog an important marketing tool for all areas of the business from publicity to sub-rights.

“The time has come for this next step in the evolution of how we bring our books to market,” said Josh Marwell, President of Sales, HarperCollins. “We are providing an improved tool that will always contain current information and one that will save time and resources for publishers, booksellers and librarians alike.”

“Count me as one of those buyers who is anxious to never have to file and sort through stacks of different catalogs again. The HarperCollins online catalog is a terrific first step towards this future,” said Matt Norcross, owner of McLean & Eakin Booksellers. “I like the display, being able to see the books sorted by release dates, and the ability to link to additional promotional materials has great potential….It really is a nice setup.”

In addition to the current titles, an author’s complete backlist will also be viewable. An advanced search tool allows customers to sort titles in a variety of ways, including genre, on-sale date and format. Booksellers will also be able to simply and easily create a list using the “My List” feature as well as write, store and share notes. Those who prefer a printed version can utilize the PDF feature or export a season’s titles to Excel for easy viewing.

“The catalog is a work in progress and we will seek feedback from customers to create the best experience possible,” said Marwell.

Issues First Quarter and Full-Year 2009 Guidance

New York, NY (March 19, 2009)—Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, today reported sales and earnings for the fourth quarter and the full year ended January 31, 2009.

2008 RESULTS

Barnes & Noble store sales were $1,439 million for the quarter and $4,525 million for the full year. Barnes & Noble store sales decreased 4.8% for the quarter and 2.7% for the full year as compared to fiscal 2007. Comparable store sales decreased 7.3% for the quarter and 5.4% for the year, in-line with guidance.

Barnes & Noble.com sales were $157 million for the quarter and $466 million for the full year. Barnes & Noble.com comparable sales decreased 10.4% for the quarter and 1.3% for the full year as compared to the same periods in fiscal 2007.

Consolidated sales decreased 6% to $1,632 million for the quarter and decreased 3% to $5,122 million for the full year, as compared to the prior year periods.

The company previously announced two charges which impacted fourth quarter and full-year results. An after-tax charge of $2.5 million, or $0.04 per share, was recorded for severance on the elimination of corporate positions. The company also sold its majority interest in Calendar Club, recording a non-cash after-tax charge of $9.7 million, or $0.17 per share. The results of Calendar Club, along with this charge, are classified as discontinued operations.

Net earnings were $81.2 million, or $1.46 per share for the fourth quarter, and $75.9 million, or $1.32 per share for the full year. Excluding the two charges noted above, net earnings were $93.3 million, or $1.67 per share for the fourth quarter, and $88.1 million, or $1.54 per share for the full year, in-line with guidance issued on November 20, 2008.

“While 2008 proved to be the most challenging year that the company and the industry have ever experienced, we are proud of our financial results in light of the macro retail environment,” said Steve Riggio, chief executive officer of Barnes & Noble, Inc. “Despite a sales decrease of 3%, gross margins improved by 50 basis points, inventory levels were reduced by 11%, and our focus on expense control and capital expenditures enabled us to generate operating free cash flow of $150 million, exceeding our expectations. As we look to 2009, we expect the challenging environment to continue. Sales forecasts have been planned accordingly and expenses have been cut. The strength of our balance sheet remains a top priority. And, while we are reducing overall expense levels where appropriate, we will continue to invest in the growth areas of the business, as evidenced in our recent acquisition of Fictionwise.”

2009 GUIDANCE

While it is difficult to forecast sales with any certainty in the current environment, based on current trends, the company expects first quarter comparable store sales at Barnes & Noble stores to decrease in a range of 6% to 9%, and full-year comparable store sales to decrease in a range of 4% to 6%.

Barnes & Noble, Inc.’s first quarter loss is expected to range from $0.10 to $0.20 per share. Full-year earnings per share are expected to range from $0.95 to $1.25.

The share count used in the computation of earnings per share is based on a basic weighted average share count of 55 million shares for the first quarter, and a diluted weighted average share count of 57 million shares for the full year.

As of January 31, 2009, the company operated 726 Barnes & Noble stores and 52 B. Dalton stores. During the fourth quarter, five Barnes & Noble stores were opened and seven were closed. Nineteen B. Dalton stores were closed during the quarter.

A conference call with Barnes & Noble, Inc.’s senior management will be webcast beginning at 10:00 A.M. ET on Thursday, March 19, 2009, and is accessible at www.barnesandnobleinc.com/webcasts. The call will also be archived at www.earnings.com for one year.

Barnes & Noble, Inc. will report first quarter earnings on or about May 21, 2009.

McLEAN, VA, March 18, 2009 — Here’s the latest book buzz from USA TODAY with a sneak peek at the highlights of tomorrow’s Best-Selling Books list:

•	Teen vampires again reign over USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list, but this week the No. 1 spot doesn’t belong to Stephenie Meyer. It goes to mother-daughter team P.C. and Kristin Cast and their novel Hunted, which went on sale March 10. It’s the fifth book but first hardcover in their House of Night series about fledgling vampire Zoey Redbird — and their first debut at No. 1

•	Clive Cussler’s latest best seller, Corsair, which lands at No. 11, features modern-day Libyan pirates. Cussler, 77, says he wasn’t surprised by the news last November of real-life Somalian pirates hijacking a supertanker. “It’s pretty much a coincidence,” he says, “but we did our research and knew there have been pirates for years and years in places like Indonesia, even Nicaragua.” Corsair, Cussler’s 37th novel, was written with his collaborator Jack Du Brul.

For all the news from this week’s Best-Selling Books list, see Thursday’s editions of USA TODAY for the top 50 books or log onto www.top150.usatoday.com for the complete list of 150 best-selling books from last week.

Vampire craze spawned by blockbuster Stephenie Meyer book series and upcoming Summit Entertainment feature film “Twilight” inspires wide range of gift options at all price points for teens and young adults—many exclusive to Borders

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 4, 2008—One of Santa’s little elves presides over a sprawling display of gift items that debuts today at Borders stores nationwide. But this is no ordinary elf—instead of a sweet smile, he flashes a sharp set of fangs, signaling that Borders is the place to find gifts for the multitudes of young people today who have become passionate about vampires. It started with bestselling author Stephenie Meyer’s first book “Twilight” about a high school romance between a mortal girl and her teen vampire boyfriend, and now three books in the series later, has blossomed into a craze that will gain even more momentum Nov. 21 when Summit Entertainment releases the highly anticipated feature film “Twilight.” Borders was bitten early by what has been called a “full-blown pop culture phenomenon” and has amassed an incredible selection of gift items—everything from the books to the film soundtrack CD to T-shirts, calendars and even jewelry—in one sweeping display at the front of its stores that is sure to attract shoppers thirsty for gifts at all price points for hard-to-please teens and young adults. Borders, which is one of Summit Entertainment’s primary retail partners for “Twilight,” will even host free in-store parties Nov. 15 at nearly all of its stores nationwide.

“If you are a ‘Twilight’ fan or know someone who is into the vampire craze, Borders is the place to be this holiday season,” said Rob Gruen, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for Borders Group. “We absolutely have it all, including an incredible range of gifts—many of which are under $20—as well as the books that inspired the phenomenon. We’re even having special ‘Twilight’ film release parties in our stores and have an incredible amount of exclusive video content on Borders.com related to this book series and the film. Borders is clearly ‘Twilight’ central this holiday!”

Books/Periodicals/Calendars
Stephenie Meyer’s books are of course front and center on the display. All four titles in the “Twilight” series—“Twilight,” “New Moon,” “Eclipse,” and the finale “Breaking Dawn”—are available with some now also in paperback editions as well as hardcover. There is a special boxed set of all four titles in hardcover, which makes an impressive gift and comes with a poster. In addition, there are “Twilight” movie related titles such as “Twilight: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion,” which is a behind-the-scenes paperback guide featuring full-color photos of the cast, locations, and sets, as well as storyboards, and interviews.

Borders also offers an exclusive 16-month “Twilight” film calendar featuring lush photographs of the cast. It is the only calendar available for the film and you’ll only find it at Borders. In addition, stores will be stocked with a magazine, “Film Fantasy Presents Twilight.”

Music
Music from the “Twilight” film is captured on the “Twilight Movie Soundtrack” from Atlantic Records, which features artists such as Linkin Park, Muse, Collective Soul, Perry Farrell and Paramore, who recorded their song “Decode” in an acoustic version that is available only on the Borders exclusive version of the CD as a bonus track.

Gifts and Stocking Stuffers
Borders is stepping outside of the traditional book, music and movie categories with the “Twilight” phenomenon, offering a wide selection of gift and stocking stuffer items. Most of these items will be available the week of the “Twilight” movie release Nov. 21 and many of these “Twilight” gift items are exclusive to Borders so they cannot be purchased anywhere else. Fans will find apparel such as T-shirts in several different designs and in styles for men and women, a hoodie, and a messenger bag. There are also bookmarks, key chains, posters, pens, a pin set, a magnet set, stickers and wall scrolls, as well as jewelry that is authentic to what the characters wear in the film including a necklace, bracelet, a leather cuff bracelet and more.

Spend $25 and Get Exclusive Poster Free
Borders is the only retailer where, with the purchase of items totaling $25 or more within the “Twilight” saga, customers will receive a free collectible and Borders-exclusive Twilight poster featuring a photo of Edward and Bella taken from the Borders exclusive calendar. Sized at 18-by-24 inches, it is the perfect extra special gift add-on for that vampire fan.

Party Like a Vampire Nov. 15!
Nearly all Borders and Waldenbooks stores nationwide will welcome fans Saturday, Nov. 15 beginning at 7 p.m. for free “Are You Ready for Twilight?” parties designed to give those anxious for the film’s release an outlet to express their passion for all things “Twilight.” Guests are encouraged to come in costume!

Parties will include activities such as a sure-to-be lively movie discussion where fans will debate what they expect from the film, “Twilight” charades, a quote contest challenging knowledge of the books and more. In addition, part of the fun will be a listening party featuring the film soundtrack and fans at many Borders stores will also be treated to a special viewing of the “Twilight” film DVD screener featuring behind-the-scenes peeks at the movie. Some stores will also host additional activities such as fortune telling, creative writing and more. Movie tickets for “Twilight” will be given away as prizes at many of the parties, courtesy of Fandango, the nation’s largest movie ticketing service.

“Twilight” Online at Borders.com-See Us on the Red Carpet at the L.A. “Twilight” Premiere
At www.bordersmedia.com/twilight/ fans will find an incredible depth of special content, much of it exclusive to Borders.com. On this special site, fans will find: five minutes of exclusive footage of the making of “Twilight;” interviews with the cast of the film that are exclusive to Borders and have to date been viewed by more than 500,000 fans; movie trailer clips; interviews with Stephenie Meyer; coverage by MTV and the founders of Twilight Lexicon of Borders’ “Breaking Dawn” release parties and an audio clip featuring the exclusive acoustic version of Paramore’s “Decode,” available only at Borders.

In addition, Borders will be reporting in person from the red carpet at the Nov. 17 L.A. premiere of “Twilight.” Special access was granted to Borders, and following the premiere, Borders will post this unique coverage for all fans to see and enjoy this red-carpet coverage certain to feature the stars!

Podcast—Borders Westwood/Los Angeles—November 16

Borders will host a “Twilight” podcast from its store in Westwood, Calif., Nov. 16. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a concert by the Twilight Music Girls. Born from a love of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” saga, the Twilight Music Girls is a group of five accomplished Los Angeles-based singer/songwriters: Kris Angelis, Lauren Harding, Laura Serafine, Lyndzie Taylor and Mallory Trunnell. These artists have vastly different styles ranging from pop to folk to rock, with sprinklings of punk and jazz. Their lyrics are poignant yet subtle, connecting with fans of the book while still utilizing universal themes that any listener can identify with and enjoy.

Following the opening concert, the podcast will begin at 2 p.m. and will include discussion of the upcoming “Twilight” film, the evolution of fandom and upcoming “Twilight” conventions. Participants should brush up on their “Twilight” trivia as well. Special guests at the podcast include three actors from the “Twilight” film, including Michael Welch, who plays Mike Newton; Peter Facinelli, who portrays vampire patriarch Dr. Carlisle Cullen; and Jackson Rathbone, who is Jasper Hale in the film.

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct. 13, 2008—Borders today announced that it has once again been honored with a Fusion Award from RIS News for its innovative cross-channel retail strategies. The Fusion Awards honor retailers for their excellence in cross-channel and e-commerce operations. RIS News also recognized Borders with a Fusion Award for its cross-channel strategies last year.Borders achieved a milestone in cross-channel retailing earlier this year when it launched its own e-commerce site—Borders.com. The site is rich with innovations that bring the bookstore experience to life online, including the Magic Shelf™, a virtual bookshelf that allows customers to easily view book, music and movie titles much the way they browse the book tables and displays and bookshelves in their favorite Borders store. Displayed prominently on Borders.com —and enjoyed by millions of Borders customers—is Borders Media, the retailer’s exclusive and original video programming that includes such popular programs as “Live at 01,” which captures all the excitement and energy of in-store performances and author events held at the Borders’ first store in Ann Arbor, and “Borders Book Club,” an online version of the neighborhood book club.

Borders.com is in the process of being introduced to Borders’ brick-and-mortar stores on existing computer kiosks, so customers will be able to order items online in the store as well as at home or at work. They can choose to have items shipped to their home or office, or they can have their order shipped for free to the store.

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 16, 2008—Today, Borders.com enjoys the special distinction of being recognized as Adobe Systems Incorporated’s “Site of the Day.”

Each day, Adobe, the award-winning software and technologies provider that has revolutionized the way people engage with ideas and information, recognizes a Web site for use of strong visual designs, superior functionalities and innovative uses of Adobe products. Adobe selected Borders for the honor in particular for its innovative “Magic Shelf™” feature, which allows customers to view books, music and movies much the same way they browse the book tables, displays and shelves that they love to explore in their favorite Borders stores. Borders developed the Magic Shelf in conjunction with Allurent, which supplied the complete technology platform for the feature.

Borders Group launched its new Borders.com site in May, and this morning Borders Group Chief Executive Officer George Jones is the keynote speaker at the Shop.org Annual Summit in Las Vegas where he is reviewing the site and its role in the company’s overall cross-channel retail strategy.
