About “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”
“Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” based on the first book in Rick Riordan’s bestselling Percy Jackson series, finds trouble-prone teen Percy Jackson having problems at high school — but that’s the least of his challenges. It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus seem to have walked out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology texts and into his life — and they’re not happy. Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now, Percy and his friends must embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true thief, save Percy’s family, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves. The film opens in theaters everywhere Feb. 12.

Ann Arbor, Mich., Jan. 14, 2010 — Borders® today announced the winners of its 2009 Original Voices Awards. Borders created the Original Voices program 14 years ago to recognize original and compelling works by new authors in such categories as Fiction, Non-Fiction and Children/Young Adult. Each winner will receive $5,000 from Borders in recognition of their individual achievements in producing innovative works. In addition, the winning titles will be featured in the company’s more than 500 Borders stores nationwide.

Fiction
“The Calligrapher’s Daughter,” by Eugenia Kim and published by Henry Holt, takes top honors in the Original Voices Fiction Category. Inspired by the life of Kim’s Korean mother, “The Calligrapher’s Daughter” is a sweeping coming-of-age story of Najin Han, born in 1910 at the start of the Japanese occupation of Korea. The story follows her life first as a privileged daughter of a tradition-bound father, then as student, patriot and humanitarian in the midst of a then crumbling Korean culture. “It’s a thought-provoking novel that will stick with you after reading it because of its atmosphere, life lessons and historical perspective,” according to the Original Voices selection committee.

Non-Fiction
Matthew Crawford’s “Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work,” captures first place in the Original Voices Non-Fiction Category. Published by Penguin Press, the book brings to the forefront the nearly lost art—and profession—of making things with one’s hands. Tradesman and motorcycle shop owner Crawford brings his own experiences and philosophies to bear as he makes a compelling argument for elevating manual crafts as a life and profession worth choosing. Members of the selection committee found that “Crawford’s blending of philosophical analysis and personal narrative makes for a wonderfully thought-provoking — and at times very humorous — read. It’s very timely as well, given the evolution of our economy.”

Children/Young Adult
“After,” by Amy Efaw and published by Penguin (Viking), is the Original Voices winner in the Children/Young Adult Category. Emotionally raw and gut wrenching, Efaw’s “After” is the unforgettable story of straight-A-student Devon Davenport who becomes pregnant, gives birth in her apartment and then does the unthinkable—throws the baby in the dumpster. Through skillful writing, Efaw sets Davenport on a course of clarity, acceptance, and redemption and brings readers along for the journey. The selection committee found that “By all of today’s standards, Davenport should be a despicable character, though through airtight storytelling, Efaw pulls readers into the thought process of the character and allows them to actually sympathize with her.”

Borders Announces 2009 Original Voices Award Winners/2
Original Voice Award nominees in each category were chosen by Borders store employees and corporate office employees. The winners were selected by a cross-functional panel of judges at the corporate office, who volunteered to read each book nominated and serve in several group discussions on the nominated selections.

There’s a crisis in US public school writing because Rhetoric emphasizes parts, not the whole, says author Bill Drew. Instead of paying attention to Rhetoric, modern writing teachers should have paid attention to Michel de Montaigne, the Father of the Essay.

Provo, UT – January 14, 2010 (PressReleasePivot) — Bill Drew, author of a successful new e-book on writing, ‘The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else’, claims Rhetoric has caused the writing crisis in US public schools. Isn’t that a rather harsh indictment of Rhetoric? “Not really,” said Drew. “What’s the dominant emphasis in teaching essay writing in public schools? Introductions, thesis statements, topic sentences, paragraphs, conclusions – all of those came straight out of Rhetoric. And those are just forms, not content. What if a writer did all those forms right, but the audience had already read the content, the ideas, before? The forms wouldn’t help.”

But forms are necessary, aren’t they? “Yes, you have to have familiar forms to convey new content and new ideas. But Rhetoric doesn’t show you how to create new content.” What about the Topics, the Commonplaces of Rhetoric? “Note that name, ‘Commonplaces’, which means things already shared and already common. Nothing new there, is there?”

So your e-book, ‘The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else’, teaches content but not form? “No, that’s not right. My book teaches BOTH content and form. You see, teaching only the forms of Rhetoric is a little like that famous picture of the six blind men: each blind man feels only a part of the elephant and tries to imagine what the whole is like. In the case of teaching students how to write essays with Rhetoric, teachers make students focus on the parts of an essay without helping them relate to the whole message of the essay, to ‘What’s new to the reader’. I used to do that, too, until I discovered that the OldView – NewView relationship is the whole message – the whole elephant, if you will – in whatever you write, including essays.”

Your focus on the whole instead of the parts sounds very unscientific, Mr. Drew. “On the contrary. For instance, in the 1970s, Physics Professor David Bohm said, ‘We must turn physics around. Instead of starting with parts and showing how they work together, we start with the whole.’ Science has been focusing on the whole first for some time now. Parts are relevant only as they relate to the whole. And the whole in writing is, ‘What’s new to the reader’. Cognitive psychology and linguistics have been moving toward newness and the whole message for some time, now. Writing teachers just haven’t caught on yet.”

How do you think this emphasis mainly on parts happened in writing, anyway? “It started over 2,000 years ago in ancient Greece with the ‘parts emphasis’ in Rhetoric, talking about parts, parts, parts. To be fair, Rhetoric does mention in passing that you have to keep your purpose in mind of persuading your audience, but Rhetoric doesn’t get at all specific about how to do that. It’s simply posturing, really.

“Instead of paying attention to Rhetoric, modern writing teachers should have paid attention to Michel de Montaigne, the Father of the Essay. In the first book ever on essays, Montaigne used the OldView – NewView technique. In each essay, he starts talking about some virtue such as loyalty, mentions what society thinks of it, and then he says, ‘and yet’, which introduces his NewView, which often is a NewView Reverse of society’s view. That was over four hundred years ago, and nobody seems to have noticed but me. If anyone has noticed, it hasn’t made it into the writing textbooks.”

“My company, NewView Options, is trying to turn that around with my new e-book, which is selling well on Amazon.com, and our new computer program to help students create NewView Thesis statements from their own experiences.”

Drew reports that students, teachers, and businessmen have endorsed his book. His company, NewView Options, provides several testimonials on their website, at http://bit.ly/SecretDNAPraises.

New e-book claims that only forms of writing are now taught in schools, not the importance of newness of content. NewView Options offers its new book and new software to help students write far better.

Provo, UT – January 12, 2010 (PressReleasePoint) – The head of NewView Options, Bill Drew, makes a rather disturbing claim. “American students aren’t doing well on national writing tests.” He bases his assertion on recent studies that indicate writing skills are in decline in US schools. Drew goes on to say, “That’s why I created NewView Options, wrote The Secret DNA of Writing Essays-And Everything Else, engineered the NewView Essay Services computer program, and created a website to bring it all together.”

American students are not writing well? “That’s right,” Drew said. “In a 2003 press release ( http://bit.ly/NCWReport ), the National Commission on Writing (NCW) called for the immediate launch of a 5-year Writing Challenge to the Nation. The NCW was greatly concerned because the 2002 national results for high school writing tests were at the same low level as the same tests in 1998. Only 1 out of 5 high school seniors could write well enough to do acceptable writing (Proficient) in college. So the NCW called on all levels of government to provide more money, more computer equipment, more teachers, more training of teachers, and more time spent on writing by students in all classes.”

Did student writing improve after five years? “Not in the Proficient level, which is what the NCW is rightly concerned about,” said Drew. “The headline of an April 2008 press release ( http://bit.ly/2008ReportCard ) said, and I quote, ‘Scores increase in 2007 for both eighth- and twelfth-graders nationally.’ That’s misleading because, when you get down into the facts of the report, it says the increases were at the Basic level, not the Proficient level. The Basic level allows serious flaws in writing, and is just above being illiterate. The Proficient level is what counts, and that was at the center of concern for the NCW in its 2003 press release. The 2008 report said there was ‘no significant change since 2002′ for both eighth- and twelfth-graders in the Proficient level, although there was a barely significant increase over the 1998 scores.”

After 5 years, why aren’t we seeing a significant increase in writing skills across the nation? “Because schools teach only the forms of Rhetoric. Now, don’t get me wrong here,” smiles Drew. “You need form in writing, but if that’s all you’ve got, then you’ve got less than half the pie. You need the content that generates form. Writing forms don’t generate content. But that’s what’s being taught in schools across the nation – form, and rhetorical form at that, from a Greek culture that died around 2,000 years ago. There’s no theory and no process being taught in schools, to generate content across the board – except my NewView theory and methods, that is. Because of that 2008 report, I decided to make NewView – which is the real secret of the DNA of writing – available to the public.”

Drew reports that one high school teacher has been quite happily using his NewView principles for over twenty-five years (since just after Drew finished the Master’s thesis that is now the basis of his new e-book). A local elementary school teacher is also using it with his third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students, with excellent results. The company provides several testimonials on their website, at http://bit.ly/SecretDNAPraises.

Drew’s e-book, The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else, is available now online at http://bit.ly/BuySecretDNABook for $8.50. It is also available on Amazon.com as a Kindle e-book for $9.50 (read all the positive reviews there). The companion software, NewView Essay Services, which automates part of the process in the e-book, is available at http://bit.ly/SecretDNASoftware on a subscription basis for 3-, 6-, and 12-month terms ($10.50, $15.50, $20.50).

The College Board says there’s a crisis in teaching writing to high school students. NewView Options offers its new book and its new software to help students write better than ever before.

Provo, UT – December 31, 2009 (PressReleasePivot) — The College Board says there’s a crisis in teaching writing to high school students. To help combat this crisis, the NewView Options company announces the release today of its breakthrough book on writing, The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else. The company has also announced the release of computer software to complement the book, NewView Essay Services, designed to automate parts of the NewView e-book. The book and software work together to help students write better than ever before.

Bill Drew, CEO of NewView Options, says, “Yes, I realize that’s a pretty audacious title on the book. But, as the saying goes, ‘It ain’t braggin’ if you can do it.’ And the book does ‘do it’ pretty well, with lots of notes at the back, providing historical and theoretical support for every assertion made in the book. But more importantly, the underlying writing principle of NewView really works with everything, and the book has plenty of examples to support each assertion.”

Drew owns up to the fact that he, himself, wrote the book. He said it’s based on research he did for his Master’s Thesis, NewView: A New Invention Method for the Essay (1982, Brigham Young University). It’s also based on Drew’s thirty years of experience, using its principles and rules to become an award-winning technical writer and editor.

If the NewView Principle of writing is so great, why did it take so long to get it into book form? “Well,” Drew says, “we’ve been raising eight kids, and that takes a lot of time, energy, and finances. I finally found the time and finances in the last year and a half to write Secret DNA. It’s been exhausting, but also rejuvenating, really.”

Drew claims that one high school teacher has been quite happily using his NewView principles to teach writing for over twenty-five years (since just after Drew finished his thesis). A local elementary school teacher is also using it with his students, with good results. The company offers a number of testimonials on their website, at http://bit.ly/SecretDNAPraises.

“There are some student testimonials, there, too,” says Drew, “as well as some from professional writers and college-level teachers. NewView makes writing easier because it actually requires students to cope forthrightly with ‘What’s new to the reader’ with a simple but powerful process that nobody else has access to, but everyone can learn, even just using the book. The software makes it more convenient to use when you’re writing something.”

Drew’s e-book, The Secret DNA of Writing Essays – And Everything Else, is available now online at http://bit.ly/BuySecretDNABook for $8.50. It is also expected to be available for download through Amazon.com starting January 1, 2010. The companion software, NewView Essay Services, which automates part of the book, is available at http://bit.ly/SecretDNASoftware on a subscription basis for 3-, 6-, and 12-month terms ($10.50, $15.50, $20.50).

Borders Group Intensifies Ongoing Strategy to Right-Size Mall Operation; Today’s Announced Mall Store Reduction Does Not Include Borders Superstores or Seasonal Mall Kiosk Business

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 5, 2009—As part of Borders Group’s ongoing strategy to right-size its Waldenbooks Specialty Retail segment and emerge with a smaller, more profitable mall chain in fiscal 2010, the retailer will close approximately 200 mall stores in January, leaving approximately 130 mall-based locations open. A list of mall stores expected to close is included in this news release and has been posted at www.borders.com/waldenstorelist. The list is not final and is subject to change pending finalization of agreements over the coming weeks. Importantly, today’s announcement regarding the mall business does not include Borders superstores or the company’s seasonal mall kiosk business, which includes over 500 Day by Day Calendar Co. units, among other mall-based retail concepts.

“America has a number of malls that continue to do well and draw customer traffic even in the current economy,” said Borders Group Chief Executive Officer Ron Marshall. “We believe there remains an opportunity to profitably operate a much smaller Waldenbooks segment that complements our core Borders superstore business and continues to serve readers in their communities. Through this right-sizing, we will reduce the number of stores with operating losses, reduce our overall rent expense and lease-adjusted leverage and generate cash flow through sales and working capital reductions.”

As long as the stores remain open, all will honor previously purchased gift cards, and gift cards can continue to be used in any Borders or Waldenbooks location or online at Borders.com. There will be no change in member status for customers who joined the Borders Rewards customer loyalty program at locations slated to close.

Stores that remain open will be integrated into the Borders superstore computer system, an investment Borders Group is making to merge all stores to a single platform. This is expected to produce operating efficiencies as well as benefits for mall shoppers, including enhanced store staff capabilities to search for and fulfill customer requests. With the store closings in January, approximately 1,500 positions—the majority of which are part-time jobs—will be eliminated. Employees have been informed of the right-sizing plan and efforts will be made to place qualified individuals in other positions within Borders Group. Displaced employees will receive severance.

The mall-based right-sizing initiative has been ongoing at Borders Group for a number of years as the retailer has closed underperforming Waldenbooks Specialty Retail stores annually as part of its overall turnaround strategy. The company shuttered 112 stores in the segment in fiscal 2008 and from fiscal 2001 through 2007, closed an average of 66 stores per year within the Waldenbooks Specialty Retail segment.

McLEAN, VA, October 28, 2009 — Here’s the latest book buzz from USA TODAY with a highlight of tomorrow’s Best-Selling Books list:

• Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has long been a history buff. It’s paying off. His newest novel, To Try Men’s Souls: A Novel of George Washington and the Fight for American Freedom, written with historian William Forstchen, enters USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list at No. 27. The novel focuses on three men involved in the founding of America and follows best-selling series on the Civil War and WWII.

• Readers can’t get enough of the Tudors. Wolf Hall, the Man Booker-prize winning novel by Hilary Mantel published Oct. 13 in the USA, enters the list at No. 49, impressive for a serious novel by a little-known writer. But then the topic of Henry VIII’s love life is near and dear to American hearts, thanks to Philippa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl and the TV series The Tudors.

For all the news from this week’s Best-Selling Books list, see Thursday’s editions of USA TODAY for the top 50 books or log onto www.top150.usatoday.com for the complete list of 150 best-selling books from last week.

Ann Arbor, Mich. Oct. 26, 2009—Borders® has long been an entertainment destination, hosting the hottest authors, musicians and other entertainment personalities in stores and capturing those events for millions to enjoy online. Now, Borders is providing customers with unprecedented event access with a live, interactive video Webcast of musician Ingrid Michaelson performing songs from her critically-acclaimed new album, “Everybody,” Oct. 28 at 12:30 p.m. ET (9:30 a.m. PT), at the downtown Ann Arbor Borders store on Liberty Street.

The event will be streamed live at www.BordersMedia.com/Ingrid.

Michaelson fans from New Delhi to New Hampshire will be able to watch as she performs live at the store —and share that experience with others by posting their thoughts in real time using the Facebook Live Stream Box. All comments will be aggregated on the concert page connecting fans globally in an interactive, real-time musical experience. After the live event, Borders will post an edited version of the event on Borders.com as part of its “Borders Live at 01” program —as it has done for dozens of other events.

Fans on the ground in Ann Arbor who want to experience the concert in person must have a wristband in order to be guaranteed access to the performance. Michaelson will sign “Everybody” CDs for fans following the event. To gain access to the signing line, fans must have a wristband and the “Everybody” CD in hand. The store will begin distributing wristbands on a first-come, first-served basis when it opens at 9 a.m. Oct. 28.

McLEAN, VA, October 21, 2009 —– Here’s the latest book buzz from USA TODAY with a highlight of tomorrow’s Best-Selling Books list:

• Mild-mannered Jeff Kinney, author of the kids’ series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, is becoming a literary giant killer. Kinney’s fourth book, Dog Days, enters USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list at No. 1, bumping Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol, which had been No. 1 for four weeks. In January, Kinney’s third book, The Last Straw, displaced Stephenie Meyer’s New Moon at No. 1.

• It may be pumpkin-carving season, but Christmas books are popping up on the list. At No. 35, there’s That Holiday Feeling, three novellas by Debbie Macomber, Sherryl Woods, and Robyn Carr. Macomber reappears at No. 48 with The Perfect Christmas. Janet Dailey’s sexy Santa in a Stetson is on the extended list at No. 65. More holiday titles are on the way.

For all the news from this week’s Best-Selling Books list, see Thursday’s editions of USA TODAY for the top 50 books or log onto www.top150.usatoday.com for the complete list of 150 best-selling books from last week.

USA TODAY’s list ranks titles regardless of genre or format, providing one of the best assessments of which books are most popular among readers and consumers each week. USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list has been published each Thursday in the newspaper’s Life section since October 28, 1993.
